Tactic: Cold Weather Survival Part 1

Tactic: Cold Weather Survival Part 1

Ah yes… Global Warming. America is in the midst of a cold snap that’s hitting just about every state. Florida was mentioned on the news today as the only state that does not have snow on the ground.

Here in Minnesota, we’ve seen real temperatures of -26 in the Twin Cities to -30 + further north with wind chills approaching -50. How would you survive in a hostile environment such as this? That is to say, what if you no longer had a nice cozy house with gas heat? What if you were out in the cold? How would you survive?

There are two things you would immediately need:

  1. Shelter
  2. Fire

Without these you would survive less than a day in that extreme cold. So let’s see how to build a cold weather shelter first. This is an excellent video on how to build your first cold weather survival shelter.

Tactics: Gun Disarm

Tactics: Gun Disarm

We established in the last post that distance is your friend and if your assailant closes that distant, you will have to use hand to hand techniques to prevent grave injury or death.

Not many of us are trained in close quarter combatives. In the ideal world you would supplement your gun skills with a good street level self-defense program. My pick would be Krav Maga for street level fighting techniques.

Here is one that you can practice with a training handgun (not a real one). Get a friend and try to perfect this technique.

Tactic: Distance

Tactic: Distance

Distance is a tactical advantage when faced with an adversary. Distance gives you time and is your best friend when confronted with unlawful conduct.

The myth used to be that 21 feet was a safe distance. But studies and the now famous Tueller Drill, have proven that unless you have your hand on your firearm, or it is out of the holster, you stand a good chance of getting injured and never getting a defensive shot off.

An assailant can cover 21 feet in 1.5 seconds. For most police officers and a majority of carry permit holders you won’t be able to get your sidearm unholstered nor will you be able to get a shot off.
